Weather & 911 Dispatching

Welcome to Dispatch Education!! I am Lisa, this is Bethany and today I want to talk about the weather.

Nice weather we are having

I hear we could get rain.

We need it. Ok. Not the mundane small talk that you might engage in at a socially awkward moment. We want to talk about what the weather does to impact 911 and all that you do.

Weather is one of the biggest factors in the volume of calls that come into 911 centers. Even a small weather event, a few inches of snow, lighting, high heat can increase the number and severity of calls significantly. So what can you do about it?

Nothing. You can’t change the weather.

True, but there are ways for dispatchers to be prepared.

YES!! I love to be prepared. Really, though, we have learned these three tips from seasoned dispatchers and wanted to pass them on to you. First, know that weather is coming. It is important for dispatchers to know what to expect when you get to the center. Use an app, watch the weather, listen to the radio. What ever way that you get your weather, just make sure that you know what is coming.

Second, be prepared with food. This could be a long shift or even one that requires extra time at the center. Pack some snacks and foods that are easy and quick to eat between call – protein bars, fruit, nuts, hummus, veggies, nut butters and crackers. Keep it simple.

Finally, take a deep breath and put on your best calm and collected ride, because Dorothy, you are not in Kansas anymore.

Good one. That’s it. Follow us here and on Facebook and we will see you next time.
